Bologna 2-3 Milan: Rossoneri Climb Into Top Half of Serie A With Much-Needed Win

Milan picked up three key points on the road at Bologna on Sunday night, as a Krzysztof Piatek penalty and strikes from Theo Hernandez and Giacomo Bonaventura helped move Stefano Pioli’s men into the top half of the Serie A table.

It had been a dire start to season for the Rossoneri, resulting in the sacking of Marco Giampaolo in October, with the experienced Pioli tasked with picking up the pieces.

With just two wins in seven heading into this one, however, it had been a similarly sticky start to life for the former Fiorentina and Lazio boss.

So when they found themselves two goals ahead just after the half hour mark, after Piatek had converted a penalty following a clumsy foul from Mattia Bani and Theo Hernandez had scored a second at the back post from a terrific assist from Suso, it would have served as a much-needed lift for their spirits.

Bonaventura struck a third early in the second half after an own goal by Hernandez just before the break had threatened to make a real game of it, but Milan would defend their two-goal lead with a relative degree of comfort for much of the second half – much to their beleaguered manager’s delight.

Nicola Sansone did find the net with five minutes remaining to take the shine off the result, but Milan dug deep and saw out an important result that moved them above their hosts and into 10th place – where they sit level on points with Torino and just one behind both Parma and Napoli.

They have some work to do if they are to claw a route into the top six, with a seven point chasm existing between Atalanta and the teams beneath them, but if Milan can keep up performances like this one then they may fancy their chances over the remainder of the season.

Bologna, meanwhile, sit four points behind Milan, and having now failed to win in seven games in all competitions, they may herald some fears of being dragged into a relegation dogfight.

They face Atalanta next week before what could be a key tie with Lecce, who sit just a point behind them as things stand.

Jurgen Klopp Provides Fitness Updates on Liverpool Trio Following Victory Over Bournemouth

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has described Dejan Lovren’s injury as ‘not too serious’ after the Croatian was substituted during the Reds’ 3-0 victory over Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon.

Klopp has calmed any fears over a serious injury for Lovren, and the German boss also provided positive news over the fitness of Adam Lallana and Georginio Wijnaldum, who were not included in this weekend’s matchday squad.

Dejan Lovren

Speaking after the victory on Saturday, Klopp explained that Lovren’s injury may only be ‘a little cramp’, given the club’s hectic winter schedule, as reported by Metro.

“Always you don’t know exactly but it looks not too serious, it looks like a little cramp,” said the Liverpool boss. “He felt something, he told us, said he for sure could go to half time, wanted to have treatment there and carry on, but we said no and stopped it there.

“That’s the status quo, you have these kind of things in this moment of the season. It is similar to what Gini [Wijnaldum] and Adam Lallana had – not serious but serious enough to keep them out.

Gini Wijnaldum

“Now we have two days to make sure they can go again. That’s what I think at the moment but I don’t know 100 per cent. Apart from that it was a perfect game. All round nearly perfect day.”

Liverpool have been sensational this season, winning 15 of their 16 Premier League matches, and opening up an 11 point gap over their nearest rivals Leicester City. The Reds face a hectic winter schedule however, as they must fight on a number of fronts, including the FIFA Club World Cup in Qatar.

Klopp was able to rest star forwards Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino against the Cherries, and they cruised to a comfortable 3-0 victory over their hosts, thanks to goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and Mohamed Salah.

Barcelona 5-2 Mallorca: Report, Ratings & Reaction as Messi Hat-Trick Sends Barça Top

Barcelona returned to the summit of La Liga with a resounding 5-2 victory over Mallorca at the Camp Nou on Saturday evening, surpassing Real Madrid, who beat Espanyol by two goals to nil.

Summer signing Antoine Griezmann opened the scoring for the hosts after a pin-point pass from Barça’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen – cutting onto his right foot and slotting coolly past Manolo Reina in the Mallorca goal.

Having won a record-breaking sixth Ballon d’Or on Monday night, Lionel Messi showed exactly why he is considered the world’s best, scoring a breathtaking goal from outside the box into the top right-hand corner of Reina’s goal.

Ante Budimir dragged the visitors back into the game after expertly chipping past Ter Stegen. The talismanic Messi added his second with another curling effort before Luis Suárez got himself on the scoresheet with an outrageous back-heel chip over the hapless Reina to make it 4-1 before half time.

Despite some early second-half pressure from the home side, it was Mallorca who scored first after half time, Budimir scoring his second of the match with a fine header from Fran Gámez’s cross.

Messi rounded off the evening with a phenomenal finish from inside the box, thumping the ball in off the underside of the bar for his hat-trick after a deft touch from Suárez fell into the path of Barcelona’s captain.

Barcelona

Key Talking Point

Blaugrana initially struggled to evoke their ‘tiki-taka’ style under Ernesto Valverde at the beginning of his tenure at the club, however he has managed to rediscover the style of play that is synonymous with the club.

In recent weeks, Barcelona have proved they are still one of the most attractive teams going forward and illustrated some sensational football against Mallorca on Saturday evening. Barça’s midfield created passing triangles around the Mallorca players and were able to cut through the heart of los Bermellones’ defence with ease.

Easy on the eye, gliding through transition and dominating possession, playing football the Barça way, Valverde will be extremely content with his sides performance. However he will no doubt want to work on his defence ahead of their crucial clash against Real Madrid in the first Clasico of the season on 18th December.

Star Man – Lionel Messi

FBL-ESP-LIGA-BARCELONA-MALLORCA

There aren’t enough superlatives to describe this man. Messi is widely considered the greatest to ever play the beautiful game and reinforced that with yet another outstanding performance on Saturday evening.

The diminutive forward was the focal point of everything Barcelona did creatively, contributing to build-up play and helping himself to a hat-trick despite a quiet second half, scoring his 617th goal for the Catalans in his 702nd game for the club.

Looking Ahead

Following on from their win over Mallorca, Barcelona travel to the Italian city of Milan to face Internazionale at San Siro in the last Champions League group stage fixture of the season. The Spanish giants are unbeaten in their five group games and will look to continue their impressive form in Europe. Ernesto Valverde’s men then travel to the Anoeta Stadium to face Real Sociedad in La Liga four days later.

Meanwhile Mallorca face Celta Vigo at the Estadio Municipal de Balaídos on Sunday afternoon before a second round Copa del Rey tie away to fourth-tier side El Álamo at the Estadio Facundo Rivas three days later.

Lazio 3-1 Juventus: Report, Ratings & Reaction as Old Lady Stumble in Title Race

Ten-man Juventus slipped to a disappointing 3-1 defeat against Lazio on Saturday evening, as the visitors missed the opportunity to leapfrog rivals Inter at the top of the Serie A table.

The Old Lady took the lead on 25 minutes, when Cristiano Ronaldo latched onto a dangerous cross from Rodrigo Bentancur to tap home his first goal from open play in 49 days. Lazio equalised on the stroke of half time however, Luiz Felipe powering home an unstoppable header from an inviting Luis Alberto cross.

Luiz Felipe

Juve were reduced to ten men with around 20 minutes left to play, when Juan Cuadrado scythed down Manuel Lazzari, just as the Italian defender was bearing down on the Bianconeri goal. Le Aquile capitalised on their man advantage only moments later, Alberto delivering an inch-perfect ball into the box which Sergej Milinkovic-Savic brought down and stroked past Wojciech Szczęsny.

The hosts were handed the opportunity to put the game beyond the Serie A champions, when Joaquin Correa was fouled by Szczęsny in the penalty area, but the Polish goalkeeper pulled off a sensational double save to deny Ciro Immobile.

Juventus barely threatened to stage a fightback with the hosts controlling possession in the final minutes, and substitute Felipe Caicedo then sealed the win in the final minute of injury time, denting Maurizio Sarri’s title hopes.

Substitutes: Parolo (6), Cataldi (6), Caicedo (N/A).

Juventus

Key Talking Point

See, England, this is how VAR should be used! With just over twenty minutes left on the clock, Lazio found themselves two-on-one with a dangerous counter attack, and Lazzari was clean through on goal. Then, whack. Cuadrado hacked the wing-back down as the last man, and Juventus’ fate seemed sealed.

FBL-ITA-SERIEA-LAZIO-JUVENTUS

The referee shocked the entire stadium however, by only producing a yellow card, but the decision was overturned with the intervention of VAR and Cuadrado received his marching orders. It was a moment which changed the match, as Lazio took the lead only minutes later, and we can all thank VAR for its vital intervention.

Player Ratings

Starting XI: Szczesny (7); Cuadrado (7), Bonucci (6), De Ligt (7), Alex Sandro (6); Bentancur (7), Pjanic (9*), Matuidi (8); Bernardeschi (6); Dybala (6), Ronaldo (8).

Substitutes: Can (6), Danilo (6)Higuain (6).

STAR MAN – One of the most mesmerising midfielders in the world. Miralem Pjanic was back on his old stomping ground in Rome, and he put in the sort of performance which convinced Juventus to sign him from Roma back in 2016. The 29-year-old drifted around the the front of his backline breaking up attacks, and constantly providing an option for his teammates.

FBL-ITA-SERIEA-LAZIO-JUVENTUS

The Bosnia international is a wonderfully talented footballer in possession, and his range of passing and his timing when delivering the killer pass makes him an absolute joy to watch. Whilst Matuidi charged up and down the pitch, Pjanic provided the perfect calm foil for the Frenchman and fellow midfielder Emre Can, ensuring Juve moved the ball with purpose, precision and pace.

A masterclass which we’ve come to expect from the human metronome.

Looking Ahead

Lazio travel to France when they take on Rennes in Thursday’s Europa League tie, before facing in-form Cagliari on the following Monday evening.

Juventus face a trip to Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday night, and I Bianconeri then host Udinese at the Allianz Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Villarreal 0-0 Atletico Madrid: Report, Ratings & Reaction as Colchoneros Slip Up on the Road Again

Atletico Madrid made it five away La Liga draws on the trot as their clash with Villarreal ended in stalemate on Friday night.

With pressure thought to be building on manager Diego Simeone, Atleti failed to find a way through their hosts’ defence, with Joao Felix going closest when he hit the post. Villarreal goalkeer Sergio Asenjo was also in inspired form, making some important stops to deny the visitors.

The draw means Atleti will likely lose more ground in the La Liga title race, with rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid both in action on Saturday.

Player Ratings

Starting XI: Asenjo (8); Gaspar (6), Albiol (7), Torres (7), Quintilla (6); Iborra (6); Chukwueze (7), Anguissa (7), Trigueros (7), Gomez (6); Moreno (6).

Substitutes: Ekambi (5), Morlanes (5).

ATLETICO MADRID

Key Talking Point

There had been talk before Friday night’s clash that there was some disharmony in the Atleti squad following a series of disappointing results, talk that Simeone was quick to quash.

However, Atleti had managed just two wins in their last six following the loss to Barcelona on Saturday, so it’s perhaps hardly surprising that questions regarding Simeone’s future at the club were starting to pop up.

FBL-ESP-LIGA-VILLARREAL-ATLETICO

So perhaps in some ways a goalless first half, interspersed by Felix hitting the post and Jan Oblak making a few stops, was exactly what the 2013/14 La Liga champions needed.

But while things were a little calmer, Atleti struggled in front of goal for the duration of the game.

Felix often looked like the player who may have been able to break the deadlock, racking up an large total of nine shots by full time, but he only ever went close, failing to hit the back of the net.

Player Ratings

Starting XI: Oblak (7); Arias (7), Felipe (7), Hermoso (7), Lodi (8); Saul (7), Herrera (6), Partey (5), Koke (7); Felix (6), Morata (6).

Substitutes: Vitola (6), Trippier (5), Llorente (5).

STAR PLAYER – The below picture probably doesn’t paint him in a great light, but Renan Lodi actually had a pretty solid evening for Los Colchoneros.

Lodi was bright throughout, providing a calm presence down Atletico’s left hand side while bursting forward to support his attacking teammates.

Samuel Chimerenka Chukweze,Renan Lodi

He did, however, miss a golden chance, smacking one over on the half-volley from close range. But all in all it was a good outing from the Brazil international, who looks like the player who could hold down the left back spot as Filipe Luis’ long term successor.

Looking Ahead

Villarreal aren’t in action until next Sunday, when they take on La Liga flyers Sevilla, while Atleti have Champions League commitments in midweek to look forward to.

FBL-ESP-LIGA-VILLARREAL-ATLETICO

A win against Lokomotiv Moscow on Wednesday would guarantee progression to the knockout stages of Europe’s elite competition, but anything less would open the door for Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen, who host Group D winners Juventus.

They’re then back to domestic duty the following weekend with a game against Osasuna at Wanda Metropolitano.

Arsenal 1-2 Brighton: Report, Ratings and Reaction as Gunners Fail to Win for Ninth Consecutive Game

Arsenal stretched their run of games without a victory to nine – their worst run of form since 1977 – as Brighton heaped further misery on the Gunners with a deserved 2-1 win at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday night.

The Seagulls had the better of the game in the opening 30 minutes with Neal Maupay and Davy Propper both drawing saves out of Bernd Leno. Arsenal, in contrast, looked lethargic – misplacing passes and struggling to carve out any opportunities of their own.

The Seagulls grabbed a deserved opener in the 36th minute, Adam Webster firing home a shot after the hosts failed to deal with a corner.

FBL-ENG-PR-ARSENAL-BRIGHTON

The goal sparked a mini-Gunners revival just before half time, with Joe Willock’s header from a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang cross being well saved by Mat Ryan.

After the break this revival continued with Alexandre Lacazette nodding home from a corner in the 51st minute to level up the scores. Arsenal continued to create chances and had a goal ruled out by VAR after David Luiz was shown to have strayed offside before firing home Mesut Ozil’s free kick.

The Gunners were then made to rue their missed opportunities when Aaron Mooy managed to pick out Maupay who headed the Seagulls in front with ten minutes remaining.

Here’s the breakdown of this one.

Arsenal

Talking Point

The Gunners came into the game knowing that anything less than a win would represent their longest run without a victory since 1977, so you would think they would have come out with a point to prove? Well, they didn’t.

Arsenal’s first-half performance was as bad, if not worse than anything witnessed during the Unai Emery era, with the hosts looking demotivated, uninspired and lethargic. They were even arguing with each other. Whatever Freddie Ljungberg had been working on during the week clearly had not had its desired effect.

Ljungberg had to respond at the break and he brought on Nicolas Pépé in an attempt to inject some life into the Gunners performance. The club’s record signing’s introduction did indeed galvanise the hosts and they soon found an equaliser through Lacazette’s header.

The revival continued for a while but soon burnt out as Arsenal allowed the visitors back into the game. That would prove to be a fatal error, with Maupay’s header condemning the Gunners to their worst run of form since the 1970s. It was nothing less than what their abject first-half performance deserved.

Player Ratings

Starting XI: Leno (7); Bellerin (6), Sokratis (5), David Luiz (6), Kolasinac (5); Torreira (7), Xhaka (5), Willock (5); Ozil (5), Lacazette (5), Aubameyang (5)

Substitutes: Pépé (6), Tierney (5), Martinelli (5)

Star Man

Lucas Torreira

It feels a bit ridiculous selecting a star man after a performance like that but I guess the Gunners best player was Lucas Torreira.

While some players’ commitment to the club can be questioned after such seemingly disengaged displays this evening, the Uruguayan’s work rate never wavered.

He passed the ball well at times as well…not all the time though.

Brighton

Talking Point

The Seagulls had lost their last four away games coming into this one and on their first-half performance it was hard to see why.

Brighton were disciplined defensively, catching Arsenal’s attackers offside frequently in the opening exchanges, while they also went forward with patience and purpose with Aaron Connolly looking most dangerous.

Neal Muupay

The Gunners’ second-half fightback was intelligently managed by the Seagulls who never let the hosts overwhelm them going forward.

Brighton got a deserved reward for their committed defending with Maupay’s winning goal, that ended their shocking recent away form.

Player Ratings

Starting XI: Ryan (7); Alzate (6), Dunk (7), Webster (7), Burn (6); Propper (7), Stephens (7), Mooy (7); Gross (6), Connolly (8), Maupay (8)

Substitutes: Montoya (7)

Star Man

FBL-ENG-PR-ARSENAL-BRIGHTON

Brighton’s defence deserve a mention for their mostly resolute performance but the Seagulls’ star man this evening was the Irish pocket rocket, Aaron Connolly.

It was a performance bursting with enthusiasm from the 19-year-old, who ran himself ragged before being replaced with 15 minutes left to play.

He got into a series of promising positions in the first half and just needs to improve his decision making to become a genuinely top-class Premier League striker.

Looking Ahead

Freddie Ljungberg,Alexandre Lacazette

Next up, the Gunners travel to West Ham as they continue to try and close the gap on the top four, before they face Standard Liege in their final Europa League fixture of the season in a weeks time.

Brighton on the other hand host Wolves on Sunday as the Seagulls will be look to pull further away from the relegation zone.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Provides Injury Update on Anthony Martial Ahead of Manchester Derby

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed that forward Anthony Martial will be injured ‘for a little while’ after the Frenchman limped off in the 2-2 draw with Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon – putting him at risk of missing the Manchester derby on Saturday.

Martial had started five consecutive matches for Man Utd following a spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury, but the 23-year-old then suffered a fresh muscular problem against Villa, and had to be substituted late in the game.

Anthony Martial

The former Paris Saint-Germain star is a key figure in Solskjaer’s side, and whilst speaking before Man Utd’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur, the Norwegian boss confirmed Martial’s injury woes, as reported by The Mirror.

“Anthony got a slight injury on Sunday so he’ll be out for a little while,” said Solskjaer.

These fresh injury issues will cause serious concern for Man Utd supporters, whose side may have to face fierce rivals City without their star forward in the upcoming clash at the Etihad Stadium.

Martial missed the Red Devils’ 2-1 victory over José Mourinho’s Spurs on Wednesday evening, and it’s likely that he’ll be absent for this weekend’s crunch derby. The France international has impressed for his side this season, bagging three goals in nine appearances, and he has struck up an exciting partnership with Marcus Rashford.

Marcus Rashford,Serge Aurier

Rashford excelled in Martial’s absence on Wednesday night, bagging both goals as Solskjaer was able to defeat his predecessor Mourinho. The victory lifted Man Utd into sixth place, eight points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

Youth academy product Mason Greenwood led the line against Spurs, and the 18-year-old is in contention to start against Pep Guardiola’s side at the weekend. Solskjaer urged Greenwood to take his chance in the starting eleven, after biding his time in cup competitions.

“That’s what he’s been hoping for, waiting for, working hard, taking his chances in the Europa League and the Carabao Cup, he’s played really well.”

Twitter Reacts as Man Utd & Marcus Rashford Brush Aside Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham

Well, who saw that one coming?

Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United homecoming was ruined by his former club at Old Trafford on Wednesday night – as his new Tottenham Hotspur team fell to a 2-1 defeat. And in truth, it could’ve been more. Lots, lots more.

Here’s how a hugely entertaining game went down on that thing we call social media. Well, Twitter.

We’re going to start off with a nice little video of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer meeting the man he succeeded in the home dugout. Look how nice they’re being to each other.

After they’d met indoors, it was soon time to get down to business.

For one of the teams at least.

Tottenham didn’t turn up, and the hosts really did. It didn’t take them long to break through either, as Marcus Rashford slammed a shot at Paulo Gazzaniga’s near post and saw it trickle in. The 22-year-old made a superb start to the game, was voted man of the match, and earned his first reward early on.

It really was a crappy attempt at a save, mind.

United were on fire, mate, and Rashford was leading the charge. He was shooting for fun in the first half an hour, and saw himself denied by the opposition goalkeeper a couple of times – with one of his efforts smashing the crossbar.

Daniel James – who started on the right – was as busy as ever too, and after getting crunched by Harry Winks in a tackle he fell at the feet of…you guessed it…Jose. DJ’s head, meet Jose’s knee, or shin, or whatever part of his body was hit.

The notoriously streetwise (cheers Giggsy) James doesn’t do head injuries for long though, and he was back up soon after to continue United’s charge to certain victory.

United were playing really, really well. And Tottenham had not even bothered turning up.

So you know what that means, right?

Of course you do.

Perhaps not too many could’ve expected this type of worldie skill from Dele Alli (even if he’s been in top notch form in recent weeks) but they could expect United to defend the goal terribly and to concede very easily after being on top of the game for the entire time preceding it.

You might’ve expected Spurs – who scored just a few minutes before half time – to really step things up, but they simply didn’t kick on and reverted back to their terribly passive football that had been synonymous with Jose’s final months managing that night’s opposition.

Passive is probably the word. And Moussa Sissoko’s defending was all kinds of that as he fouled Rashford in the box early in the second half.

Penalty. Converted. 2-1.

And that, really, was kind of it. Tottenham were no match for United’s desire on this night, and should be disappointed with how they performed.

The biggest scare for United fans came just after 9pm, as Solskjaer made the decision to bring off Mason Greenwood for Andreas Pereira.

Tottenham were beaten, and United have now leapfrogged them in the table. It’s a big win for the fans, for the Glazers, for Marcus Rashford and Fred (who was brilliant btw) and most of all, it’s a big win for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who topped off the night with THIS.

Lots of work to do for Jose Mourinho.

Burnley 1-4 Manchester City: Report, Ratings & Reaction as Guardiola’s Men Turn on the Style

A rampant Manchester City returned to winning ways as they stormed to a 4-1 win at Burnley in the Premier League on Tuesday night.

The away side started brightly at Turf Moor and had the ball in the back of the net after just six minutes, but Gabriel Jesus’ neat finish was ruled out for a clear offside. However, the Brazilian did give his side the lead after 24 minutes, curling home beautifully from the corner of the 18 yard box.

The Cityzens continued to impose themselves on the match and could have added to their one-goal lead in the first-half, but Nick Pope produced a number of fine saves. However, Pep Guardiola’s men increased their advantage five minutes into the second half as Jesus produced another wonderful finish to make it 2-0.

City made it three with 68 minutes on the clock, Rodri rifling in a stunning strike from the edge of the area. Riyad Mahrez put the icing on the cake with a late strike, but Robbie Brady was able to pull one back for the hosts in the final minute.

Here’s the breakdown of the game.

BURNLEY

Key Talking Point

After back-to-back 3-0 wins against West Ham and Watford, Burnley fell to a 2-0 defeat at home to Crystal Palace at the weekend. Despite this, Sean Dyche will have been keen to see his side impose themselves on a fragile looking Manchester City.

However, the Clarets struggled to really get into the City half let alone create any notable opportunities in the opening 45 minutes. There appeared to be a lack of intensity, with the ball continuing to come back at them. Pope made a number of stops in the first half to ensure it was only 1-0 going into the break.

Dwight McNeil

The hosts continued to struggle in the second period and failed to influence the game in any real way. Overall, it was a resounding defeat and it was a hugely disappointing performance from Dyche’s men.

Player Ratings

Starting XI: Pope (7*); Bardsley (5), Tarkowski (5), Mee (5), Pieters (4); Lennon (3), Cork (4), Drinkwater (3), McNeil (6); Hendrick (5), Wood (5)

Substitutes: Barnes (5), Rodriguez (5), Brady (6)

STAR PLAYER – It’s not often a goalkeeper concedes four goals…and yet he somehow comes away with the standout performer award, but that is the case here. Nick Pope may have put in a shaky performance at the weekend, but he was impressive against the champions.

Despite City creating a number of clear opportunities in the first period, they were only able to go in at half-time with a 1-0 advantage – and this was largely down to the work of the Englishman. There was simply nothing he could do about any of the away side’s goals. But it was his saves that limited the damage to only four, when in truth, it could actually have been worse.

MANCHESTER CITY

Key Talking Point

Saturday’s dramatic draw with Newcastle meant the Cityzens had only won once in their previous five matches in all competitions. They also came into the clash with Burnley a whopping 11 points behind their title rivals Liverpool after just 14 games. As a result, in no uncertain terms, a win was needed.

Pep Guardiola

Guardiola’s men came flying out of the traps and were completely dominant in the first-half, creating a number of clear goalscoring opportunities for themselves. On another day, it could very easily have been two, three or four nil in the opening 45.

Nonetheless, they quickly doubled their lead in the second half and the result never looked in doubt. It was an assured and highly impressive performance from the team and it will certainly be a morale-boosting result heading into the Manchester derby.

Player Ratings

Starting XI: Ederson (6); Walker (6), Otamendi (5), Fernandinho (6), Angelino (6); Rodri (9*), Silva (7), De Bruyne (8); Bernardo (7), Sterling (7), Jesus (8)

Substitues: Mahrez (7), Foden (5), E Garcia (N/A)

STAR PLAYER – Manchester City looked composed and confident in possession and that was largely down to the influence of Rodri. He was simply exceptional.

Constantly sniffing out any danger, he would intercept any pass with consummate ease before thinking positively and playing a delightful forward pass to get his side on the front foot. His assured display at the base of the midfield allowed the likes of Kevin de Bruyne to flourish further up the field.

His individual performance was capped off with an outrageous thunderbolt of a strike from the edge of the area to seal the points. A brilliant all-round display.

Looking Ahead

Burnley next face a trip to take on Tottenham Hotspur in the league on Saturday before hosting Newcastle the following weekend.

City, meanwhile, have the Manchester derby next up, as they welcome United to the Etihad Stadium. They then face Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Twitter Goes Into Meltdown as Messi Wins 2019 Ballon d’Or, Van Dijk Is Snubbed & Ronaldo No-Shows

Lionel Messi won the Ballon d’Or for the sixth time in his career, but it was the good folks of Twitter who provided the evening’s entertainment.

Of course, there were those who only wanted to wish the Argentine well after his record-breaking win…

It’s clear a loooottttt of people agreed with the decision…

There are many ways to praise the GOAT, yet it was BT Sport who summed things up…

Yes, we are truly blessed to watch Messi in action. Well, many of us are blessed, but not everyone enjoyed seeing him scoop the Ballon d’Or…

It seems Messi has as many supporters as he does haters…

Although, Cristiano Ronaldo appears to have even more haters…

And what about Virgil van Dijk? No one could hate the colossal Dutchman – just look at his smile…

Well, maybe he has one…

James Milner is only upset because he’s not one of the seven Liverpool players who made the shortlist…

However, even the Reds’ leading man had to admit he’d lost to the better footballer…

Congratulations, Lord Lionel, you’re the GOAT of GOATs. The best of the best. The cream of the crop. The creme de la…ah you get the picture.
