David Moyes and Tony Pulis Favourites to Take Over West Ham After Manuel Pellegrini Sacking

David Moyes is being tipped for a shock return to West Ham, after the club confirmed that Manuel Pellegrini had been sacked following the Hammers’ lacklustre defeat to Leicester on Saturday.

Pellegrini had come under increasing pressure during his final weeks in the West Ham job, and his position eventually became untenable when his side lost their tenth match of the season to the Foxes.

FBL-ENG-PR-MAN UTD-MAN CITY

The Hammers are now on the hunt for a successor to the departed Chilean coach, and The Telegraph report that David Moyes is in the running for a surprise return to east London in the very near future.

Moyes previously managed the Irons during the 2017/18 campaign, steadying the ship upon his appointment in November and steering West Ham away from a possible relegation. The Scotsman left the club at the end of the season having lifted the Hammers to 13th place in the league, and he has been out of work ever since his departure.

It is believed that the West Ham board are keen to appoint a British manager prior to their New Year’s Day crunch match with Bournemouth. Former Stoke City boss Tony Pulis is also being considered for the role, as he has experience in guiding teams away from the Premier League drop-zone.

Rotherham United v Middlesbrough - Sky Bet Championship

The Hammers find themselves hovering dangerously above the bottom three, sitting only one point ahead of Aston Villa in 18th place. Pellegrini oversaw a miserable run of wretched form, in which his side lost four of their last five matches, including the damning defeat to Leicester at the London stadium.

The hosts fell behind in the first half to a very weakened Foxes side, but they equalised through Pablo Fornals just before half time. Pellegrini’s fate was sealed in the second half however, when Demarai Gray scored the winning goal, sinking the hosts to back to back defeats.

Wolves 3-2 Manchester City: Report, Ratings & Reaction as 10-Man Champions Blow 2-Goal Lead

Wolves almost certainly ended Manchester City’s hopes of retaining the Premier League trophy on Friday evening, completing an impressive comeback against the champions.

City were down to ten men early on as Ederson received a red card for clattering into Jota outside of his penalty area. The Portuguese chased down Conor Coady’s excellent long ball and Ederson rushed out at full speed, mistiming and misreading the situation. Even worse for City, Sergio Aguero was sacrificed for Claudio Bravo to enter the field.

The ten men took the lead in controversial circumstances on 25 minutes when the VAR adjudged that Leander Dendoncker had fouled Riyad Mahrez. Raheem Sterling had not one but two attempts from the spot saved by Rui Patricio after the first stop was ruled out for encroachment into the area – only for Sterling to slot home the rebound of his second attempt.

Sterling scored his second of the evening minutes into the second half, latching onto an excellent through ball from Kevin de Bruyne and dinking over Patricio in the Wolves goal.

However, a Sterling mistake allowed Adama Traore to pull one back less than ten minutes later and the winger unleashed a powerful shot from distance to make it 2-1. Benjamin Mendy was the next City player to make a costly individual mistake, allowing Traore to shrug him off the ball and cross for Raul Jimenez to equalise for the hosts.

Adama Traore

The comeback was complete with just minutes left on the clock when Matt Doherty was given far too much space to drift in from the right flank, before smashing home with his left on the edge of the box. The Premier League’s comeback kings had turned it around to seal a 3-2 victory against the current champions, despite Sterling hitting the bar with a late free kick.

Wolves

Key Talking Point

Resilience has been a hallmark for this Wolves side since Nuno Espirito Santo took control, and it was there for all to see. Ederson’s dismissal and City’s change in shape made it difficult for Wolves to find a way through their opponents for much of the first hour, while the VAR controversy seemed to take the wind out of their sails for a period.

FBL-ENG-PR-WOLVES-MAN CITY

However, they stuck at their task and found space in between the City lines by moving their wide players inside and pushing their wing-backs much further up the pitch. It worked to perfection and allowed them to exploit the space between midfield and defence, and the wing-backs and centre-halves.

One man was at the heart of it all…

Starting XI: Rui Patrício (7); Dendoncker (6), Coady (7), Saïss (7); Doherty (8), Neves (6), João Moutinho (7), Otto (6); Traoré (8*), Jiménez (8), Jota (7)

Substitutes: Vinagre (6), Neto (6), Bennett (5)

STAR PLAYER

After sinking City with a double in their last encounter, Adama Traore was at it again – this time scoring once and providing the assist for the equaliser. In truth, Wolves were sleepwalking through much of the game until Traore upped the intensity.

City’s resolute shape meant that Wolves needed the Spaniard’s pace and power to drag their defenders out of position, something he did excellently by drifting between the lines and driving at speed with the ball. His technical improvements were evident with his sweet strike from distance, while his desire to win the ball back from Mendy for the equaliser shows why he is so loved by the Wolves faithful.

Manchester City

Key Talking Point

Pep Guardiola

Whatever game plan Pep Guardiola had, it went out the window when Ederson’s rash decision forced him into withdrawing Aguero on his return from injury.

However, the Spaniard reacted quickly and changed his side’s shape to a 4-4-1, with Sterling the lone striker and the likes of Mahrez, De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva attempting to break with speed. Silva dropped in alongside Mendy to create a back five at times – especially as Wolves ended the first half with their strongest spell of the match.

Guardiola was in the unfamiliar situation of being on the back foot and dominated by his opponents. The City manager made a bold decision at half time, replacing Mahrez with Eric Garcia to rebuild his side’s shape as a 5-3-1.

Their second-half game plan revolved around digging in, but the formation enabled the wing-backs to push on and move City up the pitch during spells of possession. There was an excellent discipline within the shape, which was sadly undone by individual lapses of concentration.

Player Ratings

Starting XI: Ederson (2); Walker (6), Fernandinho (6), Otamendi (7), Mendy (7); De Bruyne (7*), Rodri (7), Bernardo Silva (6); Mahrez (6), Agüero (5), Sterling (7)

Substitutes: Bravo (6), Garcia (6), Gundogan (6)

STAR PLAYER

Kevin De Bruyne,iogo Jota,Jonny Otto,Raul Jimenez

During a quiet and subdued Manchester City performance, Kevin de Bruyne’s brilliance was easy to see. He deserves the accolade of Star Player for his defensive-splitting assist alone, put the chance to double City’s lead on a plate for Raheem Sterling – such was the timing of it.

There was much more to De Bruyne’s performance though, and he showed his commitment to the cause in a fairly unfamiliar role alongside Rodri in the flat midfield four. He covered plenty of ground and used his talents on the ball to minimise City’s turnover of possession, despite their inferior numbers.

Looking Ahead

It doesn’t get any easier for Wolves, who head to Anfield on Sunday to face Premier League leaders Liverpool. An away fixture at Watford follows, before the Wanderers welcome Manchester United to Molineux in the FA Cup third round.

Manchester City, meanwhile, welcome Sheffield United and Everton to the Etihad in their next two league fixtures, before Port Vale’s visit in the FA Cup. A Manchester derby follows, as City travel to Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg.

Leicester 0-4 Liverpool: Report, Ratings and Reaction as Alexander-Arnold Inspires Reds Win

Liverpool went 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League table, after Trent Alexander-Arnold inspired them to a 4-0 victory over second placed Leicester on Boxing Day.

Liverpool started the game the brighter out of the two teams, with their high press disrupting the Foxes defence, leading to a number of scoring chances for the visitors. Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah both spurned decent opportunities, while Jordan Henderson had a strike deflected just wide of the post.

The visitors continued to dominate proceedings in the first half and eventually registered the opening goal, with Trent Alexander-Arnold swinging in an inch-perfect cross that was headed home by Roberto Firmino at the back post. Leicester offered little in the way of a response and were fortunate to go into break just 1-0 down.

It was a similar story after half time, with Firmino coming close to doubling his tally with a deft touch at the front post 54 minutes in. After a Leicester revival on the hour mark – in which they finally created their first chances of the game – James Milner added a second Liverpool goal from the penalty spot after the ball struck Caglar Soyuncu’s arm.

The visitors then added some gloss to the scoreline through Firmino and Alexander-Arnold with Leicester left shell shocked by a flurry of goals.

Here’s the breakdown of the game…

Leicester

Key Talking Point

Perhaps in response to his team selection against Manchester City which afforded the Citizens far too much space in midfield, Brendan Rodgers opted bring in the more conservative Dennis Praet for Ayoze Perez in an attempt to contain the rampant Reds. The change meant James Maddison played in a wide-left berth, a role that badly stunted his influence on the game and unfairly forced him to try and contain the incredible Alexander-Arnold.

Perez’s omission also left the Foxes unable to create overloads in wide areas, an phenomenon that has brought them so much success this season. As a result Jamie Vardy was reduced to a spectator in the first half, with the Premier League top scorer left isolated and without service.

FBL-ENG-PR-LEICESTER-LIVERPOOL

It took until the hour mark for Leicester to spring into life, with the introduction of Marc Albrighton instigating a revival. The Foxes were pressing higher and creating chances, with Albrighton combining well with Ricardo Pereira down the right-hand side.

Unfortunately for Rodgers, this brief respite from Liverpool pressure did not last long, with goals from Milner, Firmino and Alexander-Arnold putting the game beyond doubt in the second half. Overall, this result will not define Leicester’s season and providing they can bounce back the Foxes should still be enjoying Champions League football next campaign.

Player Ratings

Starting XI: Schmeichel (6); Pereira (7), Evans (6), Soyuncu (5), Chilwell (4); Ndidi (5), Praet (4), Tielemans (4); Barnes (5), Vardy (6), Maddison (4)

Substitutes: Albrighton (6), Choudhury (6)

Star Man

FBL-ENG-PR-LEICESTER-LIVERPOOL

In a humbling night for Leicester, their star man was Ricardo Pereira who provided their sole attacking impetus from right-back.

During the Foxes brief spell of dominance on the hour mark, Pereira was at the heart of all of his side’s attacks.

He also defended fairly well and was not at fault for any of the visitors’ four goals, which is more than can be said for his fellow full-back, Chilwell.

Liverpool

Key Talking Point

Having just returned from their arduous Club World Cup victory in Qatar, Liverpool could have been forgiven for lacking their normal intensity. However, the Reds showed no signs of fatigue as they forced a number of errors from the Leicester defence early on.

They continued to unsettle the Foxes with their relentless press and grabbed a deserved opening goal through Firmino. The only criticism of the Reds’ first half performances was that they should have gone into the break more than one goal up.

Liverpool controlled this game well from start to finish, stemming the mini-tide of Leicester pressure by converting a penalty, before adding two more goals 15 minutes from time.

Trent Alexander-Arnold,Andy Robertson,Jordan Henderson

The Reds controlled the game from start to finish and thoroughly deserved to go 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League table. Liverpool will walk the league this season… it’s time to start accepting it if you have not already.

Player Ratings

Starting XI: Alisson (6); Alexander-Arnold (9*), van Dijk (7), Gomez (6), Robertson (7); Keita (8), Henderson (7), Wijnaldum (7); Salah (6), Firmino (8), Mané (7)

Substitutes: Milner (7), Origi (6), Lallana (6)

Star Man

FBL-ENG-PR-LEICESTER-LIVERPOOL

Trent Alexander-Arnold is 21-years-old. Let that sink in. The Liverpool-born right-back was the best player on the pitch against Leicester, wreaking havoc all evening.

Though he was spot-on defensively, Alexander-Arnold’s real value is in his attacking play.

The defender registered two assists and scored a fantastic goal – drilling in from just outside the box. The sky really is the limit for a youngster who has a genuine possibility of winning the Ballon d’Or in the no-so-distant future.

Looking Ahead

The festive period is always a busy time of Premier League action and the games keep on coming thick and fast for both of these sides.

Leicester travel to the London Stadium to face West Ham next, while Liverpool host Wolves on Sunday.

Andy Robertson Reveals How Last Season’s Premier League Title Race Has Affected Liverpool This Term

Liverpool left back Andy Robertson says he and his club teammates are still hurting from coming up just short in last season’s Premier League title race.

The Reds had an advantage of seven points in January last season but ended up finishing one behind their rivals as the Citizens won their last 14 games to finish on 98.

While Liverpool would go on to beat Tottenham in the Champions League final, Robertson has revealed the league loss still lingers in the squad as the Merseyside club look to win that first elusive Premier League title.

Andrew Robertson

“Our total of 97 points wins 95% of the Premier Leagues in previous years,” the Scotland international told the Liverpool Echo. “Unfortunately we were in the year where it wasn’t enough.

“For us, that still hurts, missing out after such a fantastic season. It was eased by winning the Champions League and we can look back and say it was a successful season. Without the Champions League, though, we couldn’t. It would have been a very long summer.

“We know how important every single game is because every point and every win and last-minute winner and clean sheet last season was so important. We fell short but pushed Manchester City all the way.”

Liverpool are massive favourites to win England’s top flight this season after charging into a ten-point lead over nearest competitors Leicester – who they play on Boxing Day – with City trailing by 11.

Former Hull defender Robertson added: “This season, we have got a nice lead just now, but we know if we drop points then the two teams behind us will be ready to pounce.

“We just need to keep them at arm’s length, and if we keep doing that then we keep that gap. That has to be our aim.

Andy Robertson

“We know it’s going to be tough and realistically games are going to get tougher, and if we do drop points then it’s all about bouncing back. We have done that so far.

“Against Manchester United we drew and recovered straight away and have gone on a good run of winning games. Returning from Qatar, we have to pick up where we left off.”

5 Arsenal Players Mikel Arteta Should Sell During the January Transfer Window

On Boxing Day, Mikel Arteta will take charge of his first game as Arsenal manager, the Gunners travelling to the south coast for a clash with Bournemouth.

After the meeting with the Cherries, the Spaniard will have just one more match before he can start making changes to his squad, with the north London outfit welcoming Chelsea to the Emirates Stadium on 29th December. If Arteta and Arsenal are to end the season on a high, they’ll need to be rather active during the January transfer window.

There are a number of positions in the team that desperately need strengthening. However, if they’re to make the necessary additions to the side, the Gunners must shift some of the deadwood currently littering the Emirates.

Here’s five Arsenal players Arteta should look to move on next month.

Granit Xhaka

Granit Xhaka

He may have been reintegrated following a petulant gesture towards his own fans back in October, but Granit Xhaka is not fully forgiven.

The midfielder was stripped of the club captaincy for his behaviour in the 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace, with that incident showing he lacks the character needed to succeed at the top level.

Of course, it’s not just Xhaka’s attitude that falls short of the required standard. He’s been a liability for the entirely of his career in north London, and the team are often worse with the Swiss around.

He’s self-destructive, so the Gunners should rinse themselves of Xhaka before he deals any more damage. Hertha Berlin seem to be interested, and Arsenal would be well advised to sell him to the Bundesliga side.

Shkodran Mustafi

Shkodran Mustafi

It’s really not an overstatement to say the £36m purchase of Shkodran Mustafi was the worst signing Arsenal football club have ever made.

How he’s still kicking around at the Emirates is just baffling. The Gunners should have sold him during the last transfer window…and the transfer window before that…and the one before that. You get the picture.

Arsenal have to accept they’ll never get their money back, having been conned by Valencia into paying a ludicrous fee for Mustafi. The sooner he’s gone, the sooner Arteta can start working on bringing in a reliable defender.

Calum Chambers

Calum Chambers

Calum Chambers isn’t a bad centre-back, but he’s never going to be Champions League quality. He’ll probably never be Europa League quality, either.

Arsenal have to be admired for their faith in the Englishman, who’s been with them since 2014 after switching from Southampton for £16m.

When he joined, Chambers was a teenager with huge potential. Fast forward half a decade, and he’s a fully-grown man who never really kicked on and took his game to the next level.

The 24-year-old isn’t getting any better. It’s high time the Gunners cashed in and looked for a new face to build their defence around.

Konstantinos Mavropanos

Konstantinos Mavropanos

Over the course of his two full campaigns as an Arsenal player, Konstantinos Mavropanos has made a grand total of four Premier League appearances for the club. Like Chambers, he’s another who just isn’t going to make the grade for the Gunners.

It’s clear the centre-back lacks the quality to challenge for a starting berth. Competition for places is essential as Arteta aims to get the team back up and running, and Mavropanos cannot help in that regard.

If the Greek is sold in January, the money Arsenal recoup can spent on a defender who’ll actually bring something to the squad, rather than simply make up the numbers.

It should be clear where Arteta should focus in terms of revamping the side. He’s inherited a woeful defensive line, and it’ll take plenty of chopping and changing before he’s fixed the Gunners’ issues at the back.

Joe Willock

Joe Willock

Joe Willock reminds me of Arsenal academy graduate Kieran Gibbs. Not for his playing style, but for the way he is treated by the coaching staff at the club.

It’s as though they’re desperate for him to come good and be their new homegrown star, overlooking the youngster’s mediocre talents because he’s been in the academy since the age of five.

This is the world of top-level sport. It’s cutthroat, and there’s no room for sentiment. Arsenal must cut ties with squad members like Willock. They’re a drain on the team, and will never be good enough to get the Gunners back in Champions League contention. [Editor’s note: this entry is absolutely melted and I do not endorse it]

Aston Villa Planning January Spending Spree as Board Decide to Back Dean Smith

Aston Villa will back Dean Smith during the January transfer window, despite calls for the manager to be sacked.

A 3-1 loss to Southampton on Saturday saw Villa drop into the Premier League relegation zone, with Saints leapfrogging them into 17th-place. There has been speculation Smith could be axed after a fourth-straight top-flight defeat, but the board have instead decided to strengthen the 48-year-old’s squad.

Dean Smith

According to the BBC, the Villans hierarchy are looking to bring in a number of players next month, hoping to make several permanent signings as well as loan arrivals.

Having secured promotion to the Premier League in May, the club went all out to help guarantee their survival, with Manchester United the only first division side to have spent more over the summer.

Villa had a total outlay of £133m in the summer, though not all of their investment has proved wise. England defender Tyrone Mings was purchased for over £20m and has been superb under Smith, but some of his counterparts have struggled to adapt to life in England.

Wesley, who also cost in excess of £20m, has scored on only four occasions during his 18 Premier League appearances, with his last goal coming on 5 October, when the Villans beat Norwich City 5-1 at Carrow Road.

News of their eagerness to spend in January may come as a surprise, given the club are currently failing to meet Financial Fair Play regulations, and could be forced to sell players to avoid being handed a hefty fine by the authorities.

Wesley

However, that’s a penalty Villa may be willing to pay if breaking FFP rules helps them stay afloat in the top-flight.

They may not have the same attitude next term, though. It’s understood the Premier League are discussing plans to introduce a points-deduction as punishment for breaching FFP in the future, which would clearly have a greater impact on Villa’s fight against the drop.

Real Madrid Labour to 0-0 Draw With Athletic Club as Los Blancos Stay Second in La Liga

Real Madrid finished off 2019 with a second successive 0-0 draw and gave Barcelona an inch in the La Liga title race, as they laboured to a goalless home point against Athletic Club on Sunday evening.

Zinedine Zidane opted to freshen things up from that stalemate during the week. Eder Militao, Luka Modric, Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior were all reintroduced, hoping to do their bit to keep the pressure on their title rivals.

Barcelona had responded to that midweek draw with a rampant 4-1 victory over Deportivo Alaves 24 hours earlier, moving themselves three points clear at the top, so a win against an Athletic side that had conceded just 12 goals in their opening 17 league matches was a must for Real – but that was never going to be easy.

And so it proved. The home side dominated the territory in the early proceedings, but an effort cleared off the line by Unai Nunez after Karim Benzema had neatly rounded Unai Simon was as close as they came in the first half.

Kenan Kodro had a goal ruled out for offside in one of the visitors’ few threatening ventures forward, but they were largely content to sit in and frustrate their more esteemed hosts, and with the clock ticking down, Gareth Bale and and Luka Jovic were thrown on in an increasingly cagey second 45 to try and make something happen.

Toni Kroos stung the crossbar and Jovic later clipped the post with a deft header, but Gaizka Garitano’s men stood strong in the face of pressure.

FBL-ESP-LIGA-REAL MADRID-ATHLETIC BILBAO

Real had as many as 20 efforts at goal, but the eight that hit Simon’s target were dealt with well, and it finished with a point that will frustrate Zidane’s men ahead of their brief winter break that comes to an end with a trip to Getafe on January 4.

For now, it’s advantage Barcelona in the title race.

Freddie Ljungberg Admits He Wanted to Drop Mesut Özil for ‘Unacceptable’ Reaction to Substitution

Outgoing Arsenal boss Freddie Ljungberg has admitted that he ‘wanted to make a stance’ after dropping Mesut Ozil from the Gunners’ squad for their 0-0 draw with Everton on Saturday afternoon.

Ljungberg was not impressed with Ozil’s behaviour when the German midfielder reacted badly to being substituted and kicked his gloves in frustration during his side’s recent 3-0 defeat to Manchester City.

Fredrik Ljungberg,Per Mertesacker,Mesut Ozil

The Swedish boss confessed that the ex-Real Madrid star was injured for the clash with Everton on Saturday, but the 42-year-old insisted that he would not have picked Ozil, even if he was fully fit, Sky Sports reports.

“For me, I got asked after the game about Mesut,” Ljungberg said. “He walked off the pitch [in the Man City game] and then kicked his gloves. The fans were not happy. I got asked about it and said, ‘At Arsenal, that’s not how we behave and not what we do’. I stand by that.

“Mesut was injured, but I would not have picked him for the squad because I want to make a stance that it’s not what I accept from an Arsenal football player. That’s my decision. I won’t make the decisions again, but that’s what I think.”

Mesut Ozil,Emile Smith Rowe

Ozil has struggled to nail down a regular place in the Arsenal side this season, and he was dropped by ex-Gunners boss Unai Emery due to a lack of work ethic during training sessions. The draw with Everton proved to be Ljungberg’s final match in charge of Arsenal, as the club have appointed Manchester City’s assistant manager Mikel Arteta as the new boss.

But Ljungberg confirmed that the Arsenal hierarchy is keen to keep him at the Emirates in some capacity, and he will discuss his role with Arteta on Monday.

“The club has told me they want me to stay so I will sit down with Mikel on Monday and talk to him,” he said.

Wasteful Borussia Dortmund Fall to Shock 2-1 Loss Against Hoffenheim

Borussia Dortmund were made to pay for their inefficiency in front of goal as Hoffenheim fired two late goals to pick up a surprise 2-1 victory.

Lucien Favre’s side came into the game on a five-match unbeaten run and were looking to close the gap to Bundesliga leaders RB Leipzig.

Mario Goetze

They got off to a good start, with Mario Götze firing home from close range after 17 minutes to give Dortmund the lead. The German finished off an impressive team move, but it was not a sign of things to come.

Instead, Hoffenheim grew into the game and came close to grabbing a quick reply. Robert Skov saw his free-kick cannon back off the bar, but Dortmund looked to be doing their job well enough as the hosts could not find a way through.

Favre’s men created plenty of good opportunities, with Jadon Sancho and Nico Schulz both coming close, but they were unable to put the game out of the hosts reach.

They paid for their profligacy in the 79th minute as substitute Sargis Adamyan powered home an equaliser, and things went from bad to worse eight minutes later when Andrej Kramarić headed home to complete the comeback.

Dortmund pushed for their own equaliser but could not find it before the full-time whistle, bringing their five-game unbeaten streak to a sudden end.

The loss leaves Dortmund in fourth place in the Bundesliga, but they could drop down to fifth if Schalke can beat Freiburg at the weekend.

The biggest concern for Favre will be the fact that his side now run the risk of seeing their title rivals pull away from them. Bayern Munich are only ahead on goal difference, while Borussia Mönchengladbach and leaders Leipzig remain four points clear, but all three of those sides now have a game in hand.

Dortmund could now enter the winter break outside the top four, so they will be desperate to bounce back when they return to action against Augsburg on 18 January.

Aston Villa vs Southampton Preview: Where to Watch, Live Stream, Kick Off Time & Team News

There’s an absolutely vital contest at the foot of the Premier League table on Saturday with 17th placed Aston Villa hosting 18th placed Southampton in a game that could have massive say in who gets relegated this season.

Villa come into this one with just one win in their last five league games and will be desperate to make their home advantage count. Southampton on the other hand seemed to be improving after their dreadful start to the campaign, until they slumped to back-to-back defeats in their last two matches.

It’s bound to be a cagey affair. Here’s 90min’s preview of the crunch fixture.

Where to Watch

Saturday 21 December
What Time Is Kick Off? 15:00 (GMT)
Where Is it Played? Villa Park

Team News

Tyrone Mings will miss the game as he is still recovering from a hamstring strain he sustained in his side’s 4-1 defeat against Leicester earlier this month.

The England international’s absence is a big blow to the Lions’ chances as he has been in tremendous form this season.

Tyrone Mings

Southampton will be without Sofiane Boufal who remains sidelined after he stubbed his toe on his kitchen table in November – breaking it in the process.

Moussa Djenepo will also miss the trip to Birmingham with a hamstring complaint, while Kevin Danso and Yann Valery may miss out with flu and a viral infection respectively.

Predicted Lineups

Aston Villa Heaton; Guilbert, Engels, Hause, Targett; McGinn, Nakamba, Hourihane; El Ghazi, Wesley, Grealish.
Southampton McCarthy; Cedric, Stephens, Bednarek, Vestergaard, Bertrand; Ward-Prowse, Hojbjerg, Armstrong; Redmond, Ings.

Stat Centre

Villa are winless in their past five league meetings with Southampton and the Saints have not lost at Villa Park in the top flight since they won promotion in 2012.

A run of three defeats in a row means Villa are in something of a December rut, and Southampton will be desperate to extend their opponents’ poor recent run as only a win will prevent them from being in the bottom three at Christmas.

Set-pieces could be the gift that keeps on giving. Villa have conceded a league-high 10 goals from set-pieces this season, while six of Southampton’s past eight league goals have come from dead balls.

Head to Head Record

The two sides have met on 76 previous occasions and there is little to choose between them historically. Villa have won 28 of the contests while Southampton have won 25, with 23 games ending in draws.

The most recent meeting between the pair was an absolute cracker in which the Saints ran out 4-2 winners.

Dusan Tadic

In April 2016, a Dusan Tadic brace was sandwiched between goals from Sadio Mane and Shane Long for Southampton, while Ashley Westwood registered Villa’s two consolation strikes.

The game also witnessed significant fan discord at Villa Park with some supporters holding up placards in protest of the club’s unambitious ownership.

Recent Form

Both teams have experienced disappointing starts to the season and find themselves in serious relegation trouble.

Dean Smith’s side have picked up just four points from their last eight games and are only out of the drop zone on goal difference. They did get brief respite from this terrible form in midweek however, putting five past a depleted Liverpool side whose senior players were away at the Club World Cup.

Southampton experienced the nadir of their recent Premier League history in October, when Leicester put nine goals past them to no reply at St Mary’s.

Danny Ings,Angelo Ogbonna

Things haven’t been quite as bad as that in recent weeks but Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side have still lost their last two Premier League games, with their defeat to fellow relegation candidates West Ham being particularly distressing.

Here’s how each side has performed over their last five games.

Aston Villa Southampton
Aston Villa 5-0 Liverpool (17/12) Southampton 0-1 West Ham (14/12)
Sheffield United 2-0 Aston Villa (14/12) Newcastle 2-1 Southampton (8/12)
Aston Villa 1-4 Leicester City (8/12) Southampton 2-1 Norwich (4/12)
Chelsea 2-1 Aston Villa (4/12) Southampton 2-1 Watford (30/11)
Manchester United 2-2 Aston Villa (1/12) Arsenal 2-2 Southampton (23/11)

Prediction

It’s a really tough one to call. The absence of Mings could swing the game in Southampton’s favour but with Djenepo and Boufal missing for the Saints, they may not possess the necessary creative abilities to capitalise on Villa’s defensive fragility.

In the end the two sides are most likely to cancel each other out in a nervy encounter.

Prediction: Aston Villa 0-0 Southampton
