Barcelona striker Luis Suárez says he “will come to an agreement” with the club over a new contract at the Camp Nou.
The 32-year-old has 18 months left on his current deal but is eager to extend his stay at Barcelona after an impressive start to the season, where’s scored 13 goals across all competitions heading into the new year.
It was believed that Suárez would be getting transitioned out at Barcelona as they look towards the future, but the Uruguay international says he’s confident that he will eventually pen a new deal.
“I am very happy at the club,” Suárez told Sport. “I have always given my all. The statistics and the numbers back that up, I think I am still at the top of my game and when it’s time to talk, we will come to an [agreement].”
Suárez currently sits as Barcelona’s fourth top goalscorer of all time – behind Lionel Messi (618), César Rodríguez (232) and László Kubala (194).
The 32-year-old still has some way to go before climbing into second place on Barcelona’s list, but Suárez could find himself on the club’s goalscoring podium later on this season.
“I always said personal challenges have to be left to one side, but in this case, with so few [goals] to overtake a historic player like Kubala, you feel very proud,” he added.
“Second place is obviously a more difficult challenge, but that doesn’t take it out of sight. You always try to do what you can. The first place is unreachable, but it’s exciting to be able to get close to César’s figures.”
Suárez has reached his tally of 190 goals for Barcelona in just 268 appearances across all competitions, where he’s picked up 105 assists along the way too.
